Riding The Horse

For those of you who don't know... a HORSE Tournament is made up of five different card games.
Round 1 - Hold 'Em
Round 2 - Omaha H/L
Round 3 - Razz (*some of you may know this one as Lowball)
Round 4 - Stud (7-card)
Round 5 - Hi-low Stud (So how come it's the E in Horse. Can someone explain that to me).

Please use the COMMENT field and tell us which is your favorite round in a HORSE tournament, and which one gives you the most trouble? Any tips on dealing with the particulars of each round? How does it impact the overall tournament.

Me personally -- I do well at Hold 'Em, Razz and Stud -- and experience tremendous volatility in the split pot games. OMAHA has cost me many a HORSE tourney.

What's your favorite? Please COMMENT.

I believe that the "E" in Horse is supposed to represent "Eight" or better.

Snook... you're correct. That's the "official" explanation. But let's face it... it was a "stretch" by whoever coined the format HORSE :-)

Can't blame them though -- calling the tournament HORSH/L wouldn't have the same ring.

Another bit of poker trivia: Stud poker, when it was introduced was originally called "Stud Horse Poker" -- a cowboy invention that occurred around Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. So that's further precedent for having a HORSE format that has 3 kinds of stud in it.

Bonus question: Does anyone know who invented the tournament HORSE format and gave it its nickname? I believe the format was first "officially" introduced at the World Series of Poker in 2006.

Obviously they were riffing on the popular neighborhood basketball game, H-O-R-S-E
as their source of inspiration.
